The Albert S. Cook Library Leadership Institute for Students (A-LIST) offers participants experiential learning opportunities during a semester-long program. Students explore opportunities in libraries and higher education while building leadership skills, enabling them to identify, propose and lead initiatives aligned with their professional interests.
Program Purpose
So much can happen in an academic library. There are opportunities connected Outreach & Marketing, History, Teaching, Technology, Research, the Arts and more!
Cook Library's responsibilities to A-LIST students include: mentorship, experiential learning, leadership opportunities, career development assistance, and a platform for creativity and innovative thinking.
A-LIST Program Goals:
- Support experiential student learning and development
- Foster opportunities for student-worker voices to be included in library projects and initiatives
- Increase student awareness of library & information science as a profession and field of study
- Create pathways for student leadership development and awareness of LIS professions in higher education, prioritizing diverse and underrepresented students
- Enhance sense of self-awareness by understanding unique strengths
- Identify leadership core values and how they shape their decision making

Past Projects and Initiatives
Since 2014, cohorts of 3-4 students per year have supported library initiative and contributed their student perspective to a variety of projects including:
- Provide advanced research support
- Co-teach instruction sessions
- Assist with collection development
- Create physical and virtual displays
- Design various ethnographic and user experience research studies
- Enhance social media outreach
- Plan and lead library events like Banned Book Week, Night Against Procrastination, The Human Library and Academic Resource Fairs
- Improve library spaces
