Need to Know

This page includes alerts, an FAQ, and details what users will need to know and do as we transition to a new Cook OneSearch and catalog in summer 2024.

Orders Resumes July 1

Requests for new books and other materials to be added to our collections resume on July 1.

Saving Catalog Items

If you have searches or items saved in the library catalog, follow these instructions before May 23 to retain them.

Migration Frequently Asked Questions

Background

Why is the library changing systems?
The current library systems are over 20 years old and in need of an upgrade. The new systems are more streamlined and will allow for easier access to our resources.
When will the change over to the new system take place?
May 23, 2024 is the day that the new system will replace the current one.

Collections

When is the last day to place orders?
April 16th is the last day that orders for new books and other materials can be placed until July 1.
Are the collections changing?
The collections will stay the same. You will still have access to the hundreds of thousands of physical and electronic books, journals, databases, and other resources that Cook Library provides.
How will checking out books and other items be impacted?
There will be a day or two in April and May when check-outs will take longer than usual because library staff will need to manually record check-outs. Also, it may take staff longer to answer questions as they become used to the new system. We appreciate your patience.
Will I still be able to borrow materials from other Maryland libraries?
From 5:00 pm on May 17th until the new system launches on May 23rd items from other University System of Maryland and Affiliated Institutions (USMAI) will not be able to be requested. After the new system goes live, all 17 USMAI libraries will be using the same system so borrowing should be more streamlined than ever before.

Access

Will saved searches and items from the old Cook OneSearch still be available?
If you currently have a My EBSCOhost account with saved searches, alerts, or citations, these will no longer be available in OneSearch, but will still be available in individual EBSCO databases such as Academic Search Ultimate.
Will the permalinks I created in the old system still work after the changeover?
System administrators are trying to update as many links as possible, but it may be the case that the old-system links you have in your syllabi and other campus resources will no longer work after May 23, 2024. In preparation for the migration, we recommend that faculty identify resources that will need updated links and then check back in this space for instructions for how to update those links after May 23, 2024.
